This course is the second level in a series of traffic crash investigation courses. The emphasis of this course is to build upon the the principles and material covered in NEMRT's Basic Traffic Crash Investigation (Level 1) course. This course will be based on the Third Edition of the textbook Technical Traffic Crash Investigator's Handbook, Level 3, a Technical Reference, Training Investigation and Reconstruction Manual by R.W. Rivers. This textbook is the primary textbook used by the Institute of Police Management (IPTM) on a multitude of traffic crash related subjects. This course will provide officers with the skills needed to understand and utilize more advanced traffic crash techniques and procedures. This course is primarily intended for patrol officers or investigators who handle more serious traffic crash investigations as part of their normal duties and it will also serve as an excellent training platform for more advanced traffic crash investigation techniques. Course topics will include: - Vehicle damage analysis including directional thrust and rotation - Human factors as part of the chain of events in traffic crashes - Identifying and interpreting roadway dynamics, vehicle and surface markings - Lamp filament evidence including head, tail and turn signals. - Tire evidence - Newton’s Laws of Motion in relationship to traffic crash investigation - Geometric and Trigonometry calculations relative to this level of training - Collecting and documenting physical evidence - Traffic crash photography - Blue Blitz Traffic Crash Template usage - Field and final diagram utilizing different measurement techniques - Practical exercises and case studies Participants must bring a calculator with square root capability, basic metal drawing compass, 25’ and 100’ steel tape measure and a digital camera to class with them. This course will require some textbook reading. A prerequisite is that each student enrolled will have successfully passed the Traffic Crash Level 1 (Basic Traffic Accident) course and will be expected to have reviewed the prior student manual prior to the first day of class. A pre-test will be given at the very beginning of class on the first day. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
