This two day, sixteen (16) hour training program has been specifically designed for North East Multi-Regional Training, Inc. to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel tasked with conducting sex crime investigations. This course meets the requirements for First Responders and Investigators as required under Public Act 99-0801: Sexual Assault Incident Procedure Act. The course will focus on the response and investigation of sexual assault. Topics addressed include: • Trauma and the neurobiology of the brain. • Rape myths surrounding sexual assault cases will be discussed and addressed. • What it means to be victim centered and trauma informed, and how to conduct trauma informed interviews with victims. • Defendant interviews and considerations when dealing with offenders charged with sex crimes. • Investigation tips as to hospital protocol, and the role of SANE nurses and rape advocates. • Social media and evidence gathering from the internet will be discussed. • This training will stress the importance of being trauma informed and victim centered to avoid re-traumatization of the victim. The goal of this training is to educate investigators as to the complexities of sexual assault investigations including: • Misperceptions about sexual assault survivors and offenders which may make survivors reluctant to report the crime. • How trauma impacts the manner in which survivors are able to report. • How best to support sexual assault survivors during their encounter with law enforcement and the criminal justice system, and how to focus on offender behaviors as well as hold offenders accountable. • Conducting trauma informed, survivor sensitive interviews, • Effective techniques for offender interviews, • Considerations in report writing, • Investigating digital and social media platforms • An in depth look at the neuro-biology of the brain that helps explain how trauma effects memory.
