What kind of liability do police supervisors face? Understanding today's complex civil rights legal landscape is critical to ensuring the safe and efficient administration of any police department. Supervisors often fail to understand the critical connection between routine supervisory decisions and the potential for claims of constitutional civil rights violations. This new, 8 hour program will familiarize supervisory-level personnel with liability concepts federally, pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 1983 and the Federal Tort Claims Act, as well as liability for tort claims in Illinois state courts. Training will focus on established and recent state and national case law in critical liability areas, such as use of force, and provide practical techniques and approaches that supervisors can implement to help minimize their own risk and the exposure of their respective agencies and municipalities. Topics to be addressed include: -Failure to train liability -Failure to supervise liability -Policy issues with respect to search and seizure, hot pursuit and chase -Discipline and hiring -Use of force issues related to arrest and detention -Qualified immunity -Damages -Hot topics, trends, and recent Illinois legislation and court decisions This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
